What is the Seismic Isolation Bearing?

Seismic Isolation Bearings are components that are used in the construction of buildings and other structures to reduce the damaging effects of earthquakes. These bearings are designed to decouple the building from the ground and isolate it from the seismic waves generated during an earthquake. The purpose of seismic isolation is to protect the building and its occupants from the devastating effects of earthquakes, such as structural damage and collapse.
Seismic Isolation Bearings are typically made of rubber, lead, or steel and are placed between the foundation of a building and its structure. They act as a flexible layer that allows the building to move and deform independently from the ground during an earthquake. This movement reduces the stress and strain on the building’s structure, preventing damage and collapse.

There are different types of seismic isolation bearings, including:

Lead-Rubber Bearings: These bearings consist of a rubber layer sandwiched between two layers of lead. They offer a combination of high damping and stiffness, making them effective for isolating buildings from earthquakes.
Elastomeric Bearings: These bearings are made of rubber and are designed to provide a flexible and low-friction connection between the building and its foundation. They are best suited for low- to medium-rise buildings.
Steel Bearings: Steel bearings are used in high-rise buildings and other structures that require a high level of stability and stiffness. They are made of steel and are designed to provide a strong connection between the building and its foundation while still allowing for limited movement during an earthquake.
